Thelma Hudson Murphy Memorial Scholarship

The Thelma Hudson Murphy Scholarship Endowment was established by a bequest from Mrs. Murphy’s estate. Scholarships from the endowment are awarded to students who are enrolled in the Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) program or who plan to major in English or Spanish. In order to qualify, applicants must have or maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average, enroll as a full-time student (minimum 12 semester hours), and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Preference is also given to first generation college students. Mrs. Murphy’s teaching career began in 1943 at Whitharral public schools and spanned 37 years, and following retirement, she moved to Levelland to be close to her sister Jane Zapotoczny. In addition to teaching in Whitharral, she taught English and language arts at Ackerly, Brownfield, Lubbock Monterey, Lubbock Estacado and Jal, N.M. She spent much of her retirement travelling across the U.S., as well as Europe, Mexico and Canada. Mrs. Murphy died in 2015 at the age of 94.
