Albert and Doris June Melton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship program was established by Stevan and Darlene Melton of Levelland in honor of Mr. Melton’s parents. Albert and Doris June grew up in farming families in the Pettiet area of Hockley County. A veteran of WWII, Albert returned to Levelland after the war and worked as a heavy equipment operation until his retirement. Doris June was among the first students to enroll at SPC when it opened in 1958. As a mother of two young children, she was part of a group of women who saw an opportunity to go to college. Mrs. Melton graduated from SPC in 1960 and went on to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree at Texas Tech University. She taught 28 years in Levelland public schools before retiring.
