W.A. Wise Memorial

Established by family and friends, the W.A. Wise Track and Field Memorial Scholarship recognizes Coach Wise’s 28 years of service to the students of South Plains College as a professor of physical education, chairperson of the Physical Education Department and as the “Keeper of Texan Dome”. The Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding track and field athlete based on academic merit. Wise was instrumental in the establishment of the South Plains Track Officials Association, which provided officials for numerous regional and national collegiate meets. He was selected to officiate at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, CA. He retired from South Plains College in May of 1994 and moved to Burnet, Texas, where he died unexpectedly in February of 1995. He was posthumously inducted into the Texan Hall of Fame in 1996.
