Arvie E. Walker, Jr. Scholarship

Established by James and Robbie Walker of Lubbock, this scholarship honors Mr. Walker worked 22 years at South Plains College as the dean of continuing education and workforce development and later retired as the vice president for academic affairs in 2015. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student who is pursuing studies in geology. Arvie E. Walker, Jr. graduated from Texas Tech University in 1948. He did surface geology in White Flat field near Abilene, Texas before sitting on wells and examining well-bore samples. His career began with Sun Oil Company before he became an Independent Geologist. He drilled wells all over Texas, New Mexico, Kentucky and West Virginia. He was not only well respected by his peers, but was requested to “well sit” because of his expansive knowledge and experience in many areas and many producing formations. His passion for education and students was boundless. His love for geology was unequaled.
