Arvie E. Walker, Jr. Scholarship

Established by James and Robbie Walker of Lubbock, this scholarship honors Mr. Walker’s father Arvie Walker. Mr. Walker graduated from Texas Tech University in 1948 and worked as a surface geologist in the White Flat field near Abilene, Texas before sitting on wells and examining well-bore samples. His career began with Sun Oil Company before he became an independent geologist. He was involved in oil and gas exploration in Texas, New Mexico, Kentucky and West Virginia over the span of his career. Jim Walker worked 22 years at South Plains College as dean of continuing education and workforce development and later retired as vice president for academic affairs in 2015. Mrs. Walker served as a public school teacher and librarian in Lubbock and Levelland. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student who is pursuing studies in geology or in the physical sciences. In order to be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen and/or permanent resident, must enroll as a full-time student (minimum 12 semester credit hours), and must have and maintain at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average.
