J.O. "Sonny" Chapman Scholarship

This scholarship has been established by Robbie and James Walker of Lubbock in honor of Mrs. Walker’s father Sonny Chapman. Mr. Chapman was an agricultural student at Texas Tech University in 1946-47 and worked his lifetime in farming. He also started his own business, Chapman’s Meat Market, in Big Spring, Texas and operated it for 25 years. Mrs. Walker served as a public school teacher and librarian in Lubbock and Levelland. Mr. Walker worked 22 years at South Plains College as dean of continuing education and workforce development and later retiring as vice president for academic affairs in 2015. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding students enrolled in the college’s culinary arts program. In order to be eligible, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen and/or permanent resident, must enroll in at least 12 semester credit hours in the culinary arts program and must have and maintain a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average.
