Redd and Darlene Stewart Memorial Scholarship

The Redd and Darlene Steward Memorial Scholarship is awarded to commercial music student who exhibits outstanding talent in the area of bluegrass music. Minimum qualifications include: 2.50 grade point average; full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more); and U.S. citizen or permanent resident. As a country music songwriter and Grand Ole Opry performer, Redd Stewart was best known as the composer of such classic songs as The Tennessee Waltz, Bonaparte’s Retreat and You Belong to Me. The Stewards established this scholarship program for a bluegrass music student in 1991. Mr. Stewart was a guest lecturer and performed on the SPC stage on a number of occasions. The scholarship was endowed by a generous bequest that was received in 2004. Redd Steward died in 2003 and Mrs. Steward died shortly thereafter.
